The Radiography Program at Naugatuck Valley Community College repurposed a former ultrasound training suite into a modern VR training lab, equipping it with four VR training stations to support hands-on student learning.
In the video below, Program Director Mark Martone shares how introducing VitaSim’s VR X-ray Simulator at CT State Community College’s Naugatuck Valley Campus has created a “non-energized” X-ray lab – giving students a safe, realistic environment to practice without radiation exposure.
He explains how the system allows students to repeat exams as often as needed, refine positioning and technique, and build confidence before working with real equipment in clinical settings.
The new X-ray Simulation Lab gives the students a safe and realistic way to practice positioning and image evaluation - without the risks of real radiation.
Mark Martone, Program Director
The program invested in a mix of two portable and two stationary VR training stations, creating both a mobile setup for flexible use across campus and a dedicated, always-ready simulation lab environment.
Each station runs the VitaSim X-ray Simulator software, enabling students to practice exams repeatedly, refine positioning, and build confidence in image evaluation in a safe, radiation-free environment.
At CT State Community College’s Naugatuck Valley Campus, the VitaSim team provided in-person onboarding, installing four VR stations and training faculty on how to use the equipment.
The lab is now actively used to train radiography students in patient positioning and image evaluation, providing a safe environment to build confidence before entering clinical settings.
